IB PreCalc
Matrix Project
This fractal matrix investigation is designed to be a culminating project for the Matrix unit of Pre-Calculus. Students should have already studied and be reasonably proficient with the topics of trigonometry, sequences and series, matrix operations, and affine transformations in the coordinate plane.
We strove to create an entirely browser-based experience, but in the last stage of the project, we were unable to find a browser-based coding platform that would run our Python code. We currently use a graphics module to generate the image and save it to the user's desktop, and we haven't been able to make that happen in a browser yet (...but we're working on it). If anyone has ideas for a solution, please contact me. Background Knowledge Worksheets: Because the typical high school PreCalculus curriculum addresses matrix operations but not how they relate to transformations of 2D space, we found it necessary to create worksheets that target these skills and slowly introduce the concept of an IFS fractal. Students should be comfortable with this content before implementing this project.
Downloadable Handouts of Project Files This website houses all the files and information for implementing this project, but we found it helpful to share hard copies of the handouts with students to help them organize their work.
Standards Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice
Common Core Standards for Number and Operation Perform operations on matrices and use matrices in applications.
